In the years that followed, the Emperor displayed a calloused disinterest in Vader, trying to replace him and using his relationship with Padme Amidala Natalie Portman as emotional leverage.
Nevertheless, Vader struck down anyone seeking his spot at Palpatine's side and drowned his sadness by delving deeper into the dark side. It takes a special kind of evil to lie to someone about being able to save their loved ones from death, only to turn around and abuse them physically and emotionally.
Yet, Palpatine felt no remorse. As we know, the clone army was the backbone of the Galactic Republic throughout the clone war, but it was also an important tool for Emperor Palpatine's annihilation of the Jedi Order.
His execution of Order 66 was carried out with minimal resistance from the troops, resulting in most becoming violent, mindless drones for the new Empire. Despite this loyalty, Palpatine and other high-ranking Imperials went ahead with Project War-Mantle as depicted on "Star Wars: The Bad Batch," leading to the abandonment of the cloning program in favor of Stormtrooper recruitment. What should have been a simple disbanding of a business agreement turned into a calculated genocide in short order.
After forcing the Kaminoans to stop production of clone troopers and destroying Tipoca City with excessive force — preferring to sink years of research into Kamino's ocean as opposed to leaving it for someone else to find down the road — Palpatine was at least partially responsible for the death of several key Kaminoan officials.
Presumably, most of the species are wiped out post-clone war, meaning the Emperor was indirectly to blame for their borderline extinction. During this same period, Palpatine took custody of a young Zabrak and had him raised in the ways of the Dark Side. Since Sith tradition says that there are only ever two at a time, that meant Palpatine eventually had to murder Darth Plagueis, thus becoming the galaxy's senior Sith Lord.
In this guise, he would continue to manipulate galactic conflicts, while as senator, he could use those conflicts for his own advancement. Since nobody knew that he was the one behind the Trade Federation's blockade of Naboo, Palpatine was able to exploit the incident to consolidate his political power. When Chancellor Valorum failed to take strong action to defend Naboo, Palpatine encouraged Naboo's Queen Amidala to call for a vote of no confidence in Valorum, which in turn led to a new election.
Being the senator from the planet that was in crisis, Palpatine was perfectly positioned to win the election and become the new supreme chancellor of the Republic.
Taking the top office in the galaxy was a huge step in Palpatine's rise, but it would still take years of simultaneously consolidating his political power as chancellor while also exacerbating the galaxy's conflicts as Darth Sidious before he would be able to gain absolute power.
He would also need a new Sith apprentice, as Darth Maul was defeated and seemingly killed by Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi as the Naboo crisis was drawing to a close. After the defeat of Darth Maul, Palpatine's new Sith apprentice was the elderly aristocrat Count Dooku , who acted as his proxy in leading a separatist movement of multiple systems that were dissatisfied with the Republic.
When the Separatists were found to be building a vast droid army, Chancellor Palpatine was granted special powers to deal with the threat. As it turns out, using other proxies, he'd already commissioned an army of clone troopers, and his new powers enabled him to command that army to go to war against the Separatists. Not only was Palpatine's power increased, but the Republic ended a long period of peace to become a dominant military power in the galaxy, a big step closer to becoming an empire.
Outwardly, the chancellor pretended to be reluctant to take on the burden of greater power and lead the Republic into war, but of course, it was all part of the long game he'd been playing since the beginning.
At Palpatine's urging, Anakin killed an already-defeated and literally disarmed Dooku. From then on, Palpatine began actively working to seduce Anakin to the Dark Side of the Force and make the powerful young Jedi into a new Sith apprentice. In his new Sith persona as Darth Vader, Anakin Skywalker would become the most powerful ally Palpatine had ever had and a key part of his plan to eliminate the Jedi and rule the galaxy as a tyrant.
When the Jedi finally realized that Palpatine was a Sith Lord, it was far too late. A vicious battle with Jedi Master Mace Windu brought about a fearsome change to Palpatine's physical appearance. While there has been much speculation , it's unclear whether Palpatine was disfigured by Force lightning, as he claimed, or whether he was revealing what had already been his true appearance.
In any case, the evil within him came to the surface, and his face became grotesque and slightly inhuman. Ironically, his disfigurement enabled him to turn the Senate against the Jedi who'd attacked him.
He took the opportunity to seize the power he'd worked so long to bring within his grasp and declared himself emperor of the galaxy. Although the Galactic Senate would remain in place for years to come, the Republic had become the Empire, and with the Jedi eliminated by the clone troopers, there was nobody left to challenge Palpatine's power. Almost 20 years later, Emperor Palpatine dissolved the Galactic Senate permanently.
He saw no further reason to maintain the illusion of representative democracy, because the completion of the Death Star enabled him to rule through fear.
Commanded by one of the Emperor's most trusted and ruthless operatives, Grand Moff Tarkin , the Death Star was a mobile space station with the power to destroy entire planets. VadersLaMent , Apr 23, Registered: Jul 6, Robimus , May 3, Registered: Mar 6, Because that's just the way he is?
Because he enjoys being a manipulative old man who revels in mass murder and absolute power? General Valerian , May 3, Registered: Apr 29, I think that palpatine tricked himself.
He probably thought he was doing it for the good of the galaxy. He was blinded by his own desires. SateleNovelist11 and DarthRelaxus like this. Registered: Oct 29, LelalMekha , May 7, SateleNovelist11 likes this. I think that's bull. I think he knew he was evil.
And loved it. He was speaking in terms of Anakin's descent to Vader when he said it, but I think it can be applied to villains like Palpatine and Dooku as well. DarthJenari , May 8, This Pure Evil was Headlined on December, He is an immensely powerful Sith Lord and the ruler of the Galactic Empire, which he formed from the Galactic Republic, who was also the de facto ruler of the Separatists, which he used to give himself autocratic powers as Chancellor of the Galactic Republic.
As the Dark Lord of the Sith, he plotted to overthrow the Jedi by manipulating the events of the Clone Wars to bring himself to rule the whole galaxy; thus posing as the Supreme Chancellor of the Republic throughout these events. He is the Jedi's archenemy expressly Yoda , and they were suspicious of him even just after Count Dooku's death when they were unaware that he was Darth Sidious.
He is also later revealed to be the secret benefactor and de facto leader of the First Order, and that he is the paternal grandfather of Rey.
Darth Sidious is reviled as the embodiment of evil in the Star Wars universe, being born as a power-hungry psychopath. Sidious is a cruel, extremely egotistical and a megalomaniacal sadistic dictator who seeks to become immortal and rule the whole galaxy as an unstoppable god, and unlike Darth Vader, he is portrayed as being irredeemable.
He is also manipulative and incredibly intelligent, having played everyone during the Clone Wars as if they were mere pawns in a chess game. He was having to play both sides in the Clone Wars, using his charismatic charm to convince the Galactic Republic to establish the Galactic Empire, fooling many to make them see him as a benevolent senator and even succeeding in near eradicating the Jedi Order to take control of the galaxy.
He's also very paranoid as he would raze cities or kill off populations cause he believes some might conspire against him. Despite his arrogance, Sidious was highly intelligent, patient, and manipulative, possessing some sense of humor as shown by his laughter.
He was also known to be treacherous and deceptive, as he would kill his allies or have them killed such as Darth Tyranus and Nute Gunray, as he had no desire to share his power with anyone, especially his apprentices.
This was evident once more in Star Wars: Battlefront II , when he secretly engineered Operation Cinder, a top-secret scorched-earth policy directed against his own empire should he die - which happened at the hands of Anakin Skywalker - ultimate treachery to planets who remained loyal to the empire and made great sacrifices for his cause. It did not matter to Sidious. In his eyes, Empire without him leading it was not worth existing. Unlike most of the other Sith Lords, he prefers using mental breaking and the Force over physical strength and he dislikes fighting with lightsabers, preferring this option only as a last resort or when he clearly had the upper hand.
During the early parts of his plan, Darth Sidious preferred to speak to servants such as Lord Tyranus by a hologram. He gave orders for the Separatists' next move and then disappeared as quickly as he appeared. He abandoned his public persona and openly became a tyrannical dark lord; despite this, he never revealed that he was the Dark Lord of the Sith to the public; as only his most trusted followers were which were a few aware of his Sith identity.
When he was the Emperor, Sidious was apathetic to the well-being of his subjects, only caring to the extend of his control and power and provoking struggles for post between his subordinates.
Because of that, the Rebellion gained more followers as the population was unsatisfied with the incompetence of the administration. Sidious also greatly desired to become immortal; his master had once had the ability to keep others from dying using the dark side of the Force.
Sidious learned this same ability and desired to use a similar power, if one did exist, to increase his lifespan so that he could rule the galaxy forever, with one such scheme involving the creation of a Force-made virus, called Project Blackwing.
Besides, Sidious has a God complex, wanting to rule the Universe like a God by using Lothal Temple to have access to the realm of spacetime. He ultimately was worshiped by Exegol's inhabitants like such.
However, Sidious' searches for such secrets of the Sith were ultimately fruitless as the Blackwing virus turned its hosts into undead zombies and had to be eradicated , and he never found a way to become immortal.
