Dog racing as we know it today originated with an American inventor named Owen P. Smith, who was moved by the grim deaths of the rabbits to come up with an alternative. In he secured a patent for what he called the Inanimate Hare Conveyor. Smith and two partners also designed the first modern greyhound track, the Blue Star Amusement Company, which opened in outside Oakland, California. Gambling, while popular, was illegal. The first successful track, the Miami Kennel Club, was one Smith and his partners opened in in a swampy Florida locale known as Humbuggus.
It was so close to the Everglades that the owners employed a snake catcher to snag stray reptiles. The key to its success was the use of electric lights, according to Gwyneth Anne Thayer, author of Going to the Dogs , a book on greyhound racing and its place in popular culture. Lights meant that races could be run at night, when working people could attend. The track later was converted to horse racing and renamed Hialeah Park. In , on the other side of the state, Derby Lane opened under a cloud.
The partners who built it ran out of money, so lumber magnate T. He grew beans in the infield, track historian Louise Weaver says.
In , with the Great Depression bankrupting local governments, Florida legislators passed a bill to legalize and tax betting on the races. Governor Doyle Carlton, a devout Baptist, opposed it. Instead, he vetoed it. State senators overrode his veto, making Florida the first state to legalize betting on dog races. Mickey Mantle filmed a cigarette commercial at Derby Lane.
Boxing champs and movie stars hung out at the tracks. Florida can be a sunny place full of shady people. The money involved in dog racing attracted plenty of them.
Winning recalls Tampa mobster Santo Trafficante, Jr. Some mafiosi were more than customers. Mob involvement sparked rumors about fixed races. Bettors said dogs were overfed to slow them down, or their toes cinched up with rubber bands to hamper their ability to run, or they were drugged to make them faster or slower. Months later, a trainer at another Florida track was suspended after a dozen dogs tested positive. Grey2K has spent nearly 20 years compiling reports on the welfare of racing greyhounds.
It contends that even standard industry practices constitute mistreatment. It says dogs are forced to race under conditions that can cause serious injuries, such as broken legs and backs, fractured skulls and spines, and even electrocution by the lure. In the Greyhound Racing Record said 30 percent of greyhounds bred for racing would compete, leaving open the fate of the other 70 percent. Dogs that do race stop being competitive around four years old.
Grey2K has collected a raft of stories about greyhounds being euthanized or sold to laboratories. Two of the worst scandals occurred in the s, however. The guard died before he could be tried. In a trainer at a track in the Florida town of Ebro left dozens of dogs to die after the racing season ended.

The Greyhound Inn has arguably the best view of the majestic ruins of Corfe Castle from a garden which has its own terrace bar Order your favourite food and drink from our garden bar and then relax on the terrace or in the garden on a summer afternoon taking in the sights of the castle and the historic steam trains of the Swanage Steam Railway line which passes by.
The Greyhound Inn has history, character and atmosphere with plenty of seating in the garden for the whole family to enjoy. Pre-booked a table for Sunday lunch for a day trip to Corfe. Clean premises with a, now normal, one way system in place and masks required if moving around the pub. We arrived nearly an hour early for our table and were welcomed and accommodated with a table.
Generous portions, and nicely cooked. The staff were pleasant and attentive. Dogs are welcome — no mask required for them. Toilets are clean but the hand dryer in the ladies is situated quite high up — a challenge for shorter people.
We called here spontaneously on our last day of our holiday and were really glad that we did. We sat outside in the dog friendly beer garden with fabulous views of Corfe Castle and passing steam trains on the Swanage Railway. There was an outside bar which made food and drink orders really simple and easy. Our food came quickly and was delicious. When we arrived the woman behind the bar was very quick to make us feel welcome and gave us the option of sitting outside or showing us to our table which was nice.
We arrived a little early for our booking so took the opportunity to go outside for a drink from the garden bar with a beautiful view of the castle before going in for our food. Inside, table service was flawless and the mussels and cheese pizza were absolutely delicious even the kids meals were tasty and a good portion! The churros were also a big hit with the kids A thoroughly enjoyable evening I have never used tripadvisor but thought it was well worth leaving a review on this one.
The meal was so fantastic I had to review straight away. The atmosphere here is great and there are easy to follow covid rules. The young guy at the bar was friendly and welcoming, food was delivered with a smile behind a mask and the mussels were heavenly.
The tables are constantly being cleaned well by 2 chirpyembwra of staff to ensure clean and safe and all staff are wearing a mask. Really fabulous find.
I came here for lunch before visiting the castle on a Wednesday afternoon. I had the carnivore pizza with mushrooms and it was soooo good! Yesterday I had the chorizo burger which was massive and delicious. Absolutely loved it!! We sat outside with the castle ruins right in front of us and ate the most delicious meal!!
It really added to our already incredible day! Booking advisable. Our food is fresh, seasonal, local and, like so many things in life, best kept simple.
